DECORATING 101: Part 1

I get asked to help people decorate a lot, which is humbling, because I am flying by the seat of my pants. I don't really follow any rules, and I do what I like and makes me happy...and what makes Marcus happy too, but he doesn't really care.
Hence the pink dining room.

So I thought I would share how I decorate. I am breaking this up into several posts, because I have had lots of conversation hearts this morning and I can't sit still for long!

Disclaimer: My opinions are not professional ones.

One of the most important things to me is for our home to represent our family.
I don't want it to look like a matchy furniture set in a showroom. And I don't want it to be untouchable, fancy, or like everyone elses home.

I hope that if you walked into our home you would get a sense of who we are and what is important to us.

In this picture you see a Bible verse.
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you declares The Lord, Plans to prosper and not harm you, plans for hope and a future.
I always say that I am so glad to know that God has a plan, because I do not!

I also have my great grandmother's china displayed. It's over 100 years old. It's worth it to me to have it out, risking the possibility of breaking it.  Thankfully, all of it has stayed in tact..even with a 2 year old.

And we use it occasionally too. I would use it more, but I have to wash it by hand.  And I am a big fan of the dishwasher!
I would be so sad if something got broken, but it's not life or death. And it's important that things don't matter too much! They are just things.

We got these angel wings for our 12th anniversary.
They represent our baby that was due that month.
That was one of the saddest times of our life, but God is faithful, and we like to remember that.
And we have the promise of meeting that baby in heaven one day.
Sadly, I was due to have a baby this March 1st too. We need to get something to represent him or her also. Even though they are not here, they are apart of our family, and I don't want to forget them.
It makes me SO beyond thankful for Katie Belle.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

OK, Way to bring a room down Dina! Let's move on!

I have the kitchen table we used when I grew up.
Of course I painted it, because it was that 80's oak color.
That brings me to another point.  Don't be afraid to paint antiques! If you think it will look better a different color, then paint it!
I also have my old high chair (painted) and my grandmother's flour sifter that the plant is sitting in. And Katie's cute hand print on a jar. All sentimental.

We have a little corner that represents our dogs.
They are Marcus's BFFs. My friend, Jennifer, painted those cute pictures.
 Katie and Blue:
I risked our lives on the side of the highway to get that picture!

This picture shows our dog corner and then some family pictures on the right.

I have a wedding picture of my grandparents, parents and us.
And also, my parent's wedding cake topper.

Above the picture of my parents is a little nativity that I leave out all year long. Jesus is for the whole year, not just Christmas.

Here are some other crosses.
And I framed an article that was in The Dallas Morning News, about our last house.

This picture shows my husbands recliner :(
I don't really want that to represent me, but it represents the one I love, so that's ok. It's just practical for us. I don't want to even know what my couch would look like, if we didn't have that recliner.
So sometimes things have to be practical, and that's ok. You have to LIVE in your house, it's not a showroom.

But you can also see my giant cross painted by my friend, Ryane!
Our house is pretty kid friendly too.
This trunk holds crayons, markers and paper for Katie to get creative whenever hear heart desires.
And her kitchen is in my kitchen, so we can cook at the same time.
I don't want my house to look like a big toy room, but I want it to be a fun place for Katie to grow up!
So hopefully you hear my house is saying, "Hey, we love Jesus, make yourself comfortable, look how much we love our family and the things from the past. We have a 2 year old that we adore. Oh and did you notice we love color too?!"

What do you want your house to say?

Is your kitchen floor tile or vinyl? I only ask b/c you don't see a grout line.

I always love to see how you decorate, because it is always creative, bright, and fun. I don't really like to decorate, but I am always interested in your decorating. I love how you have mantles without fireplaces and even shutters inside. That is so fun! After seeing several pictures of your shutters on the walls, I made my husband make me some from re-purposed pallet wood. I love them!

I love it! I too, would ask you to help me decorate if we lived near one another. (I don't want that to sound creepy though lol)

Love your style and as always your house looks amazing. And it's obviously more than just a house, it's a home.

I love your style of decorating! And for a while I tryed to go with a Tuscan theme, when I had sort of been cottage funky before. Thankfully I am back to my own sense of what feels good, because our home is not Tuscan at all. Haha! If I could find a green couch like the one you have I would LOVE it! It is so pretty!

You just seem like the sweetest person!! Your house looks great and looks like a home with a lot of laughs and love! I love the sentimental wings...I had a miscarried 6 years ago and I bought a Dyson...if I could exercise for awhile the next best stress reliever was to clean....Your wings are a beautiful idea! Lots of thoughts and prayers for your fertility...it is such a bumpy road.

Your home seems warm, cozy and fun!!! I feel the Love of the Lord when I read your blog. I want people to feel God's love in my home and I try to be the home that is always ready for vistors (although it rarely does)!

Your house is just waaaayyy cuter than mine will ever be!! HA! In about a year when we are done paying our student loans (thank you, Dave Ramsey), can I pay you to come decorate my abode??? And you think I'm joking!!!! ;) I especially love Katie Belle's kitchen! Be still my heart!

I love seeing your house pictures, because you have a colorful, quirky style much like me! I love using oddball items for decorating! Though right now, I've been trying to blend my husband's stuff with mine. It's not very easy because I have eclectic taste, and his house was all country/wester/rustic stuff. Which in doses I don't mind, but it was ALL over his house. I love me some rustic, but then I have to have a sparkly light or something nearby to balance it out. ha! (which is exactly what happened in my dining room!). :)

I just love looking at pictures of your home! It's so fun and inviting! I love that little shelf below your large cross picture. Is it an old window attached with brackets?

Dina said...

Yes, Rebecca!

It is an old window attached to the wall with brackets. It fit the spot perfectly. And I couldn't put a table there, because the bottom of the fireplace got in the way.

I love your home! I often look at your blog when I am trying to pick new paint colors and I am definitely trying to add more color. I love the verses throughout your home. I so want my home to be a place of welcome and peace-the peace is at times a challenge with 3 boys and a 2 year old girl, but I am trying.

Hahaha! Your house DOES say all those things...success! You and your houses have inspired me so much.

I meant to ask you where you got the white picture framw with the pink heart. A good friend of mine collects hearts, and she's a huge picture-taker, so I think she'd love something like that.
